The Duchess and I have picked a date!
Calm down, I ‘m talking about a date to dig our garden. This Friday, we have decided to start the big dig. We have a very aggressive garden planned.
OK, here is the actual plot of land we’re working with…

We’ll move the dog before we bring in the heavy machinery, don’t worry. I’ll try to keep you posted on our progress. In the mean time, I implore all of you readers to give your two cents. This isn’t mine or the Duchess’s first garden, but it’s been a good while for both of us. If any one has any hints, advice or an extra shovel to come and help dig, please come forward. I’m sure there’s going to be some kind of “Bushel of FV’s Harvest Contest” in the future. So, please feel free to guide us with any tips you have gathered over the years.
Here’s some of my favorite garden pics I found laying around…
We can do this and so can you! Keep us up to date on your gardening adventures too! I’ll compile some pictures of readers gardens and post everyone’s progress from time to time. From seed to table, let’s all have a great growing season. The almanac says it’s going to be a great year!
Plant it, pick it, eat it,

What type of tomatoes are you planning on growing? What type of peppers?
Just a suggestion. With the amount of grass that I see in the picture,it may be a good idea to invest in the rental of a rototiller.
You will have an easier time of loosening the “virgin” soil.By hand it will be a tougher frustrating time. Our neighbor Ray used one years ago when he did his and boy was he ever glad.
Good luck on your endeavor!ZP and I will be anxious to compare our yields!
When I had a grassy area outside my kitchen turned into a patio, 5 men showed up with picks and shovels and they dug up the grass in no time. If you can’t get 5 strong men, then UB advise about the rototiller sounds very good. If you are just removing the top layer of grass, make sure you save it in a corner of the yard because that will make good rich soil that you can return to the garden next year.
Well isn’t that a coincidence, I too am planning on building a chicken coop. There is an issue of This Old House that has one a like a lot, when I find my copy, I’ll let you know which issue, and I also saw a nice saltbox style one on line that was not too expensive. I’m getting 3 hens, A Rhode Island Red, a black and white speckled one, and I haven’t decided on the third one.
Good luck on your garden, you can call me, an expert gardner, anytime.
